What are the costs of a burnout?

When it is about implementing health and well-being programs in a company the financial aspect is the most crucial one – and how much money an employer is willing to spend for health programs is related to the financial advantage, the increase in productivity and thus in the company`s returns.

However, it may be considerable to include in those decision not only the costs of the program, but in addition the costs of a burnout if no support is offered by the employer.

The duration of a person to recover from a burnout depends on the intensity level, personal capabilities and the recovery quality. On average it takes 6 months to recover from a burnout, some people may also continue working meanwhile. However, in this case presentism occurs which refers to a person’s physical presence while mentally being mostly absent, and thus, not actively being productive

For one month of burnout recovery of a full-time employee the company misses 8 hours * 5 days * 4 weeks = 160 hours of work while still paying the full salary.

Even high or regular stress levels make us vulnerable for other illnesses. For instance, if five full-time employees are sick for one week, it resumes in a loss of 5 employees * 8 hours * 5 days = 200 hours of work

In addition, the work has to be done by other employees, which can either imply extra hours and more costs, or a potential increase in stress of the colleagues who have to compensate the work of the missing employee.

Especially qualified personnel cannot be easily replaced or the work cannot be substituted by other colleagues. If the position is replaced by a new person the time until the person is familiar with the structures, processes, and tasks of the new position has to be additionally taken into account.
In addition, other colleagues have to dedicate their working time to teach and assist the new employee.
